The current Apple TV 4K launched back in 2022, but there have been rumors predicting that a next-gen version would be announced at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference, or WWDC 2024. But no such luck. Following the conference it was clear that no new Apple TV was imminent.

The main rumors about a next-gen Apple TV have been that it would have an upgraded processor like the A17 Pro. That make sense given fresher other that it’s likely a minimum requirement to run Apple’s new on-device AI. A new Apple TV could also hit a lower price point than the current 64GB model’s at $129 US.

More interesting recent rumors also surfaced that Apple could be planning to add a built-in camera to a future Apple TV. That camera could support both FaceTime video calls and gesture controls. This is plausible since tvOS 17 added a FaceTime app to the Apple TV, allowing users to have video calls by using the rear camera on a connected iPhone or iPad. If the Apple TV gained a built-in camera, users would no longer need to rely on an external device. You can make hand gestures during video calls in the FaceTime app and other video calling apps to fill the screen with 3D effects. For example, you can hold two thumbs up to show fireworks on the screen or make two peace signs with your hands to show confetti.

Regardless, it’s unclear whether the tech would be for Apple’s next streaming box or a future version. Either way, it looks like we’ll have to wait a little longer for a revamped version of the Apple TV 4K.

Specifically around smart home, Apple has also considered a lightweight smart display — something akin to a low-end iPad — that could be used around the house. This aligns with their ambitions around automating household functions and offering a revamped Apple TV set-top box with a built-in camera for FaceTime videoconferencing and gesture-based controls. And the technology will all work seamlessly with both the iPhone and Vision Pro. Such a device could be shuttled from room to room as needed and hooked into charging hubs stationed around the house. Apple has started small-scale test production of the screens for this product but hasn’t made a decision on whether to move forward.

As of this writing, it is unclear if or when these devices will be released. But it’s exciting, despite being rumors.
